LAKE EILDON NATIONAL PARK

Public BBQ

Lake Eildon National Park presents a study in contrasts that typifies many Australian camping destinations. The location delivers genuinely spectacular panoramic views across the reservoir that justify the drive from Melbourne, with the kind of breathtaking vistas that make you understand why people endure the inconveniences of bush camping. The camping facilities along the lakeshore offer direct water access for swimming, fishing, and campfire activities, though visitors should prepare for rustic conditions. The sites themselves sit on soft soil that becomes muddy quickly, so sturdy footwear and a pragmatic attitude toward cleanliness are essential. The water quality varies seasonally, sometimes appearing murky during certain periods. Management appears to be in transition, with a young couple working to improve the facilities, though basic amenities like showers can be unreliable. The absence of a proper tourist information centre means arriving prepared is crucial. Despite these operational challenges, the park's natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it worthwhile for those seeking an authentic bush camping experience rather than resort-style comfort.
